Manchester United’s proudest tradition is producing talented players from the academy. There is nothing better than seeing a young prospect coming through the ranks and making it in the first team.

There is plenty of excitement about Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho after their emergence into the first team. Now they are among the first names on Erik ten Hag’s team sheet.

The latest first-team debutant, Ethan Wheatley, became United’s 250th academy graduate when he came off the bench against Sheffield United on Wednesday night. The 18-year-old has scored 20 goals and provided five assists at youth level this season.

Wheatley was rewarded after his match-winning brace helped United win the U18s Premier League Cup final on Tuesday night. His first team debut came 24 hours later.

Former Manchester United academy graduate Danny Simpson knows the U18s side and he spoke highly of Wheatley last night.

Speaking to MUTV ahead of kick-off, Simpson observed Wheatley warming up and said (via United In Focus): “Look at the size of him, he’s got everything. I know what he’s capable of.

“He’s a big man and a good finisher, he’s a good kid as well. What I like about him, he’s a bit feisty.”

It’s early days for Wheatley and he’s got a lot to learn.

Phil Bardsley, who also came through the youth ranks at United, added: “His goalscoring record is phenomenal.”

This is just the start for Wheatley. He will be aiming to get more minutes under his belt before the end of the season.
