One of the most delicate situations that the AC Milan management must tackle in the coming months is the renewal of Mike Maignan’s contract, and they reportedly have a plan.

This morning’s edition of Corriere dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) takes stock of the talks to extend Maignan’s deal, recalling how the CEO Giorgio Furlani already experienced complicated dynamics a year ago when negotiations were ongoing to renew Rafael Leão’s contract.

In fact, obtaining the signature of Maignan – under contract with Milan until 30 June 2026 – does not seem simpler than the discussions with the Portuguese were, mainly becuase there is a difference to be bridged between offer and demand before a happy meeting point is fine.

All this of course is underpinned by the fact that big European clubs could come forward with significant salary proposals, which could undermine Maignan’s intentions to stay at Milan.

At the moment, the former Lille man receives €2.8m net per season and is asking for a big pay rise for the renewal. Milan intend to double his salary in order to keep him, but it may not be enough.

The Rossoneri are thinking of also integrating the bonuses into the new agreement because Milan want to do everything possible to keep him, according to the Roman newspaper, also budgeting for an economic effort.

Ultimately, ‘Magic Mike’ is a player who – when in form – always makes a difference: just look at the saves against Fiorentina during the last league game.
