After a tense period of extra time with neither side able to find a winner, the game went to a penalty shootout to find a winner.

Real Madrid held their nerve in the shootout to book their place in the semi-finals of this year’s UEFA Champions League. They won the shootout 4-3 with Antonio Rudiger winning the shootout for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. It was a heartbreaking defeat for Manchester City, who must now pick themselves up for Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea.

Ederson-7/10: Made a smart save in the lead up to Rodrygo’s opener but could nothing about the resulting rebound. Saved and converted a penalty in the shootout as he did all he could to book City’s progression, but it wasn’t to be.

Kyle Walker-7/10: After being named in the starting lineup, City’s captain was at fault for Real Madrid’s goal but was superb after that. He nullified Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo in a valiant effort.

Ruben Dias-7.5/10: Dias put a superb effort at the back. Did all he could for his team.

Manuel Akanji-8/10: The Swiss international has a poor first half but was superb in the second half. Akanji did all he could before he could go on no more.

Josko Gvardiol-7/10: The Croatian international defended well and did his job when in possession.

Rodri-8/10: The rest did him the world of good as he dominated midfield. Rodri couldn’t have done anymore to lift his team to victory.

Kevin De Bruyne-7.5/10: Scored City’s equaliser and should’ve won the game moments later. De Bruyne ran himself into the floor before he was substituted.

Phil Foden-6/10: Not his best day as he played primarily on the right wing before moving centrally. He didn’t have the impact he would’ve liked on the big stage.

Bernardo Silva-6/10: He toiled away but didn’t have the impact City fans are accustomed to. His poor penalty in the shootout gave Real Madrid the momentum in the shootout, which they seized upon.

Jack Grealish-7.5/10- He was arguably City’s most dangerous player before being substituted. Did all he could to get City back on level terms.

Erling Haaland-5/10: Another almost night for Haaland. He hit the bar in the first half but couldn’t get into the game after that. He doesn’t look 100% fit, and Pep Guardiola revealed he asked to be substituted at the end of normal time, which is a concern for Manchester City.

Jeremy Doku-8/10: He tormented the Real Madrid defence after coming on for Grealish. It was a superb cameo from Doku that on another night may have been match winning.

Julian Alvarez-6/10: Came on for extra time but couldn’t affect the game as he would’ve liked. Calmly slotted City’s opening penalty of the shootout before Lunin’s heroics swung the penalty shootout.
