Zadina, Smith end lengthy scoring droughts in 3–2 shootout win over Penguins

Friday was finally fruitful for two frustrated forwards. Detroit Red Wings youngsters Filip Zadina and Givani Smith both scored in their team’s 3–2 shootout victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Jan. 29. Smith’s goal ended a 15-game individual scoring drought. Zadina’s go-ahead marker late in the second period snapped his 18-game goalless streak. Red Wings rookie Lucas Raymond scored the shootout winner to ensure that Friday’s game was a uniformly positive experience for Zadina and Smith. Both players entered Detroit’s organization during Ken Holland’s tenure as general manager along with the lofty expectations that almost always accompany high draft choices. Smith, 23, was Detroit’s first of two second-round selections at the 2016 NHL Draft (the second, taken seven picks later, was Filip Hronek).
