Senators Secure Goaltending with Joonas Korpisalo’s 5-Year Deal
Perry Nelson-USA TODAY Sports

The Ottawa Senators have made a significant move to bolster their goaltending by signing Joonas Korpisalo to a lucrative five-year contract worth $20 million. It’s the longest deal signed on the opening day of free agency in 2023. It’s a longer deal and it certainly bucks the trend on Saturday, but it could be the right fit for Ottawa.

The 29-year-old netminder had an impressive season, posting a .914 save percentage in 39 games split between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Los Angeles Kings.

After being traded to the Kings at the trade deadline, Korpisalo excelled with a 7-3-1 record, a 2.13 goals-against average, and a .921 save percentage in 11 starts. Although the Kings were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, Korpisalo maintained a .892 save percentage and a 3.77 goals-against average in the postseason.

The Senators Badly Needed to Secure Their Goaltending

The Finnish goaltender’s performance caught the attention of the Senators, who sought to strengthen their goaltending depth. Korpisalo’s addition brings stability and skill to the team’s crease. His career stats of a 3.01 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage in 221 games demonstrate his ability to make crucial saves and provide consistency between the pipes. Fans are excited to see how Korpisalo and Anton Forsberg mesh with one another, and whether he’s the perfect fit to help bring Forsberg along.

With this signing, the Senators secure one of the top goaltenders available in free agency, further solidifying their roster as they aim to compete in the upcoming season. On Saturday, the Los Angeles Kings inked a one-year contract with seasoned goaltender Cam Talbot worth $1 million. Talbot, 35, was previously traded to the Ottawa Senators from the Minnesota Wild.
