San Jose Sharks activate forward Ryan Carpenter from injured reserve, place Givani Smith on IR
Robert Edwards-USA TODAY Sports

The San Jose Sharks are making some moves after the roster freeze was lifted.

On Thursday, they activated forward Ryan Carpenter off injured reserve, while placing fellow veteran Givani Smith on IR.

Carpenter was placed on IR back on Dec. 4 due to an undisclosed injury, and has missed the team’s last 10 games.

The former Bowling Green product started the season with the Sharks’ American Hockey League affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda, before getting called up on Oct. 26. Carpenter ended up playing 18 games before getting injured, potting a goal and four assists. His goal came in his last game on Dec. 3, in a 6-5 loss to the New York Rangers.

Carpenter is currently on a one-year, two-way deal with San Jose, beginning his second stint with the team after playing 22 games with the Rangers last season. The 32-year-old was with the Sharks’ organization starting in 2015, before getting claimed on waivers by the Vegas Golden Knights during their expansion 2017-18 season.

In 348 career games, Carpenter has scored 28 goals and 49 assists.

It is unclear when Smith was injured, as he returned to the lineup on Dec. 21 against the Arizona Coyotes, after missing the Sharks’ previous two games with a lower-body injury.

The former Detroit Red Wing is currently in the first year of a two-year contract with the Sharks, worth an AAV of $800,000. In 26 games, Smith has scored just one goal and two assists.

The 25-year-old was traded to the Florida Panthers from Detroit last season, playing 34 games with the Cats, along with one game in their first round series against the Boston Bruins. Smith has totaled nine goals and 12 assists in his 145-game NHL career.

The Sharks (9-23-3), who are due to play the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night, currently hold the worst record in the league, and are 17 points out of a Wild Card spot in the Western Conference.
