Report: Flyers Sign Owen Tippett to Eight-Year, $49.6 Million Contract Extension
Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

On Friday morning, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported that the Philadelphia Flyers and Owen Tippett were closing in on a long-term contract extension in the neighborhood of eight years with an AAV of between $6 million and $6.5 million.

NHL Network’s Mike Kelly, as well as other sources, later reported that the Flyers signed Tippett to an eight-year, $49.6 million ($6.2 million AAV) deal.

The Flyers winger is currently in the final year of a two-year, $3 million deal he signed with the Flyers as an RFA on July 29, 2022. Tippett has been one of the league’s most prolific players off the rush this season, ranking eighth in rush chances and fifth in goals off the rush, per Sportlogiq.

At his current pace, Tippett is on track to score 30 goals for the first time in his nascent career, as well as 50 points. The 24-year-old is, however, on injured reserve with a lower-body injury, which may affect that pace slightly.

With the Flyers locking Tippett down long-term, the bulk of their in-house free agent business for the summer has been completed. Other notable Flyers free agents this summer will include Bobby Brink, Ivan Fedotov, Adam Ginning, Wade Allison, Ryan Poehling, Egor Zamula, Nick Seeler, and Sean Walker.

With the exception of Brink and maybe Zamula, there’s no guarantee any of the players above are back in Orange and Black next season. Fedotov, of course, never donned a Flyers sweater to begin with.

In the interim, though, the Flyers will be happy to have tied down Tippett for the next eight years. Since he went down with his injury, the team hasn’t looked the same and is currently on a season-long four-game losing streak. Tippett will be back scoring crazy goals for Philadelphia in no time.
