Penguins Make Goalie Trade With Panthers
USA TODAY Sports

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins were expected to be one of the more active teams at the trade deadline with a fire sale. Despite that, the Penguins were relatively quiet.

After trading Chad Ruhwedel the morning of the deadline, the Penguins made their second move of the day in a goalie swap with the Florida Panthers. The Penguins sent Magnus Hellberg to the Panthers in exchange for Ludovic Waeber.

The Penguins also acquired a conditional seventh round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.

Hellberg played most of his season with the Penguins AHL affialite in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and appeared only three times at the NHL level. He was credited with one win and a .922 save percentage with the Penguins.

With the WBS Penguins, however, Hellberg played most of his time as backup to Joel Blomqvist. In 19 games played Hellberg notched a 9-8-2 record with a .905 save percentage.

Waeber is a 27-year-old netminder who is playing his first season of North American hockey. He’s split time between the Panthers’ minor league affiliates the Charlotte Checkers and Florida Everblades.
