Penguins Get Boost Ahead of Oilers Game
USA TODAY Sports

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins are still aiming to make the 2024 NHL Postseason, but they’ll have a steep hill to climb. As they prepare for a vicious opponent in the Edmonton Oilers, the Penguins may have some reinforcements on the way.

Head coach Mike Sullivan listed top line forward Bryan Rust as a game-time decision. Rust has been out of the lineup with an upper-body injury since the Penguins’ 7-6 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. Rust had two goals and an assist in that game before an early exit.

Rust was on a huge roll when his injury occurred, picking up seven goals and four assists for 11 points in his previous 11 games. Without Rust in the lineup, the Penguins have 2-5-0 and have been outscored 29-14.

It’s not clear where Rust will slot into the lineup, but it’s likely he is put back to his usual spot on the first line with Sidney Crosby. Rickard Rakell will likely be demoted as a result of Rust’s return.

Sullivan also stated that Drew O’Connor skated in the morning as he works his way back from a concussion.
