Owen Tippett to sign eight-year contract extension with Philadelphia Flyers
Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

Philadelphia Flyers forward Owen Tippett has signed an eight-year contract extension with an AAV of $6.2 million.

The deal will run until 2032. Tippett joins Sean Couturier (2030) and Joel Farabee (2028) as the only players signed to long-term deals in Philadelphia.

The 24-year-old winger is currently in his third season with the Flyers, on pace for the best season of his pro career. He has 18 goals and 30 points in 46 games, putting him on track to register his first 30-goal, 50-point campaign. He came close in his first full season with Philly last year, scoring 27 goals and 49 points.

Drafted 10th overall by the Florida Panthers in 2017, it seemed like just a matter of time until Tippett was going to hit star status. He had 44 goals and 75 points with the OHL’s Mississauga Steelheads during his draft year, putting his lethal shot on display. He had a seven-game NHL stint with the Panthers in 2017-18 but was sent back to the OHL, where he once again thrived offensively.

Tippett finally played a full NHL season during the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season, but struggled to produce. It wasn’t until he was traded to Philadelphia with two first-rounders in the deal that sent Claude Giroux to Florida in 2022 that Tippett started to show that he was going to be an effective NHLer.

Ever since, he’s been a key piece of the team’s top six, and a large reason why the Flyers have been dangerous this season.

He is currently on injured reserve with a lower-body injury and will not be cleared to return until the end of the NHL All-Star Game break – ironically, against Florida.

The Flyers are coming off a 3-0 loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday and will look to bounce back with a 12:30 PM outing against the Boston Bruins on Saturday. Philly is currently third in the Metropolitan Division with 56 points, five behind the New York Rangers. It’s been a difficult stretch for the squad, though, losing the past four games.
