On this day in 2014, Oilers acquire Ben Scrivens from the LA Kings

Scrivens played 21 games for the Oilers throughout his time in the 2013-14 campaign with a record of 9-11-0. However, his most memorable moment for fans and the entire NHL community was when he set an NHL record on January 29, 2014, against the San Jose Sharks. Scrivens had an outstanding 59-save shutout game that helped lift the Oilers to a 3-0 victory against the Sharks.

“I had an awful, awful warmup, it was an inauspicious start to it,” Scrivens told media.

“It’s one of those things where you try not to look at the forest when you’re in the trees. You try to focus on the process and give yourself a chance to make that save and when the puck drops again, you try to focus on the next one and don’t get too far ahead of yourself.”

His performance earned him a two-year contract extension worth $2.3 million per year. The following 2014-15 season, Scrivens rose to the test as the Oilers starting netminder. 

Unfortunately, Scrivens struggled, posting a record of 15-26-11 with a 3.16 goals against average and a .890 save percentage. The Oilers made the decision to place him on waivers in October of 2015 for the purpose of assigning him to the American Hockey League’s Bakersfield Condors, leaving Anders Nilsson and Cam Talbot to mind the net for the Oilers.

In December of the 2015-16 season, the Oilers traded Scrivens to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Zack Kassian. Scrivens played a total of 78 games with the Oilers, with a record of 11-14-2.

As for the third-round draft pick in 2015 the Kings received, they chose to trade it to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Blue Jackets also traded the pick to the Detroit Red Wings, who selected Dominic Turgeon. The forward played nine games over two years with the Red Wings and eventually signed as a free agent with the Minnesota Wild in 2021.
