Oilers star Connor McDavid tests positive for COVID-19

As noted by ESPN stats, Edmonton Oilers star center and captain Connor McDavid currently leads the NHL with 53 points (19 goals, 34 assists) in 33 games, but it appears both he and forward Derek Ryan might not be available for Wednesday's contest at the Toronto Maple Leafs.

According to Mike Zeisberger and the NHL's website, Edmonton coach Dave Tippett confirmed Tuesday that McDavid and Ryan both tested positive for COVID-19.

"They both tested positive this morning, so they'll have another test today and we will see where they are at," Tippett explained about their statuses heading into Wednesday. "Kept them off for precaution, and the way things are going here, this is a daily occurrence. When you play in as many cities and there's different rules everywhere you go, it's crazy. They just tell me if he's positive, he's positive. When two of your four centermen are out, and one of them is Connor McDavid, that is not good positive."

Meanwhile, Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe announced that Auston Matthews, his star center, could also be out Wednesday due to a positive virus test recorded on Monday. Matthews has 20 goals and 13 assists in 28 games this season and produced a negative PCR test Tuesday, and Keefe said the 24-year-old had not yet been ruled out for Wednesday's matchup.
