Oilers place Seth Griffith on waivers for purpose of assignment to Bakersfield Condors
CLIFFORD OTO/THE STOCKTON RECORD / USA TODAY NETWORK

This morning, the Oilers announced via their social channels that the team has waived (F) Seth Griffith for the purpose of assignment to the Bakersfield Condors.

With Bakersfield Condors training camp set to kick off on Monday, I was wondering if we would get some roster moves ahead of tonight’s game against the Winnipeg Jets. To this point, the Oilers have made a handful of cuts to varying positions but with under two weeks left until opening night, I think it’s fair to assume that the pace of these moves will start to pick up in a hurry. Even though Griffith actually played quite well during his tune-up time with the big club, he wasn’t going to crack the opening night roster and it makes sense to have him head back down to California. As for what’s next, the 29-year-old will look to build upon a very strong campaign with the Condors that saw him put up 30 goals and 80 points in 64 games played.

A fifth-round pick in 2012, Seth Griffith has spent time with the Bruins, Maple Leafs, Panthers, Sabres, and Jets organizations before eventually settling in with the Oilers/Condors for the start of the 2020-21 campaign. To this point, Griffith has only played in one game with the Oilers — he got called up for the December 18th matchup against Seattle when Jesse Puljujarvi got COVID — but I wonder if the fine work he’s doing in the AHL will earn him a chance at some point. Even though there are probably a couple of guys ahead of him on the depth chart, the Oilers’ right side isn’t exactly flush with talent and that could end up being the opportunity he needs. That is, of course, if he clears waivers first. As always, we wait.

In 80 NHL games played, Seth Griffith has registered eight goals and 11 assists for 19 points to go along with 24 PIMs, 71 shots on goal, and a -4 rating.
