NHL Notebook: Possible CHL-NCAA rule change on horizon and Golden Knights Adin Hill injured during game vs Blue Jackets
Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

A change regarding restrictions for Canadian Hockey League players could be on the horizon.

During Hockey Night in Canada’s Saturday segment, Sportsnet‘s Elliotte Friedman said that over the past week, the NHL gave general managers an update on the relationship between the future of the NCAA and CHL’s relationship.

“The NCAA is actively considering removing all restrictions for CHL players to play in the NCAA after their CHL careers are done,” Friedman said.

For years, the CHL and NCAA have battled for top players to join their leagues as they embark on their hockey careers. Players eligible to be drafted into the CHL in their young teenage years often decide which route to take.

Top Canadian players such as Cale Makar, Adam Fantilli, and Macklin Celebrini have taken the NCAA route, skipping the CHL altogether.

Although the change is not confirmed with no timeline set in stone, the NHL has begun preparing for the adjustment to be made.

Friedman continued saying the deal could affect a handful of things but emphasized the agreement between the NHL and CHL.

If a player gets drafted from the CHL, NHL teams hold their rights for two years. However, if a player is drafted from the USHL or NCAA, NHL teams hold their rights for four years. This means all rights must be collectively bargained with the players.

The change not only could open options for junior players in North America but also help improve the overall talent in the NCAA.

Although, the Canadian Junior Hockey League currently serves as an option for elite players who want to preserve NCAA eligibility. In the case where the NCAA does allow CHL players to play, the Canadian Jr. A league may become a less popular spot for players looking to drive their career in the NCAA direction.

Golden Knights Adin Hill injured during game vs Blue Jackets

Las Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Adin Hill exited the game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday due to an injury in the third period.

The 27-year-old is suspected to have suffered the injury with a score of 3-1 for the Golden Knights in the third period while making a stretch left-pad save on a shot from Blue Jackets forward Cole Sillinger. Although Hill kicked the puck to the corner, making a routine save, he headed into the tunnel shortly after and was replaced by backup Logan Thompson.

Vegas continued to score once more to secure the win 4-2. Following the game, Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy told media that when Hill came to the bench, he told staff he was not 100 per cent, per  The Athletic‘s Jesse Granger, but gave no further information.

Hills’ 2.64 GAA ranks him 14th amongst goaltenders this season and 12th for save percentage at .914.

Earlier this season, Hill missed nearly a month with a lower-body injury and was previously hurt to begin last season’s Stanley Cup Playoffs. However, he was recovered when he became the team’s starter in the second round.

In the case that Hill does miss more time beyond Saturday, Thompson will most likely slide in as the team’s No.1, and the club has since recalled Jiri Patera.

The Golden Knights are currently 38-25-7 and hold the second Wild Card spot in the Western Conference.
