Minnesota Wild’s Mason Shaw done for season following ACL tear

The incident occurred roughly five minutes into the first period of play when Shaw went to forecheck Golden Knights’ forward Jack Eichel and lost his balance, crashing awkwardly into the boards in what was a non-contact injury. Shaw was in severe discomfort and was helped off the ice by the Wilds’ medical trainer and teammate, Brandon Duhamie. The 24 year old has had to overcome three ACL injuries already throughout his career.

Shaw has emerged as a bonafide bottom-six role player for the Wild this season after grinding it out the past five seasons with the Iowa Wild in the American Hockey League (AHL). This season, he has registered 17 points (seven goals, 10 assists) in 59 games, four fighting majors and 79 penalty minutes. 

The Lloydminster, Alberta product was drafted in the fourth round (No. 97) in the 2017 NHL Draft by the Wild. He spent three seasons with the Medicine Hat Tigers in the Western Hockey League (WHL), and during the 2016-17 season, he notched 27 goals and 67 assists for 94 points in 71 games. He would miss the entire 2017-18 season due to an ACL injury but made his pro debut with Iowa in 2018-19, registering 33 points in 76 games. Last season, he set a career-high 52 points in 62 games and was ranked third among team leaders in Iowa. Shaw scored his first NHL goal against the Chicago Blackhawks on Oct. 30. He is in the final year of a two-year $1.5 million extension he signed with the Wild. Shaw will become a restricted free agent this summer.
