JT Miller named most exciting player and MVP as Vancouver Canucks announce 2023-24 team award winners

The Vancouver Canucks announced their team awards for the 2023-24 season during tonight’s game against the Calgary Flames. Seven awards were up for grabs, with four decided by fan votes. 

Let’s begin with the four fan voted awards: 

Quinn Hughes: Walter (Babe) Pratt Trophy – “Best Defenceman”

Quinn Hughes once again claimed the Walter (Babe) Pratt Trophy for the fifth consecutive year as the Canucks’ top defenseman. With an unparalleled season boasting remarkable achievements, Hughes has left an indelible mark on franchise history. His exceptional playmaking skills were on full display throughout the season, as evidenced by his nine games with three assists, a feat shared by only two other defensemen in NHL history. With records shattered and milestones reached, Hughes’ dominance on the blue line continues to write its own chapter in Canucks’ history. JT Miller: Pavel Bure Award – “Most Exciting Player”

Miller electrified Canucks fans throughout the season, earning him the coveted Pavel Bure Award for the “Most Exciting Player.” With his dynamic playmaking ability and clutch performances, Miller consistently brought fans to their feet. His offensive ability was on full display as he tallied an impressive 102 points but his impact extended beyond just scoring, as his leadership and determination ignited his teammates and the fans at Rogers Arena. Whether it was a game-winning goal or a jaw-dropping assist, Miller truly was “The People’s Champ”.

Dakota Joshua: Fred J. Hume Award – “Unsung Hero”

Despite flying under the radar, Joshua’s contributions on both ends of the ice have not gone unnoticed. This season, he showed his versatility with 18 goals, 14 assists, and 31 points in 62 games while achieving a career-high three-point game on February 13th against Chicago. However, his impact extends beyond scoring as he also emerged as a stalwart defensive presence for the Canucks. Joshua’s role on the formidable third line alongside Teddy Blueger and Conor Garland for the majority of the season further exemplifies his importance to the team’s success, earning him well-deserved recognition as the Unsung Hero.

JT Miller: Cyclone Taylor Trophy – “Most Valuable Player”

Beyond his impressive stats on the ice, Miller’s leadership both during games and behind the scenes has been invaluable to the team. With notable accomplishments like consecutive goal streaks and goals in the clutch, Miller’s consistency and versatility has rightfully earned him the Cyclone Taylor Trophy. Having also won both the Pavel Bure and Cyrus H. McLean Trophy, his 2023-24 campaign will forever be etched in Canucks’ history.

JT Miller: Cyrus H. McLean Trophy – “Leading Scorer”

Miller’s stellar season has firmly established him as one of the Canucks’ “go-to guys”, clinching the coveted Cyrus H. McLean Trophy for “Leading Scorer.” With an impressive stat line of 36 goals, 66 assists, and 102 points, he’s been the driving force behind the team’s performance. This season also marked the 1st time Miller has surpassed 100 points in his career. From his four-game goal streak to his ten-game point streak, Miller’s consistency has been unmatched. Beyond the personal accolades, his efforts have fueled the Canucks’ as they prepare to make a strong postseason run.

Quinn Hughes: Daniel and Henrik Sedin Award – “Community Leadership”

While his on-ice performance as captain has been remarkable this season, it’s his off-ice commitment to supporting the community that truly sets him apart from most. Hughes spearheaded the Team 43 Initiative, donating four tickets to every home game to first responders in B.C. He emphasized the personal connection to this approach as his grandfather was a New York City firefighter for over 30 years. 

Elias Pettersson: Three Stars Award – “Most Three Stars Selections”

Pettersson secured the Three Stars Award for the second consecutive season as his stellar performances earned him numerous Three Stars selections. With 6 selections during the month of January, it’s safe to say Pettersson’s new year began exactly the way he was hoping for.
