Is Samuel Ersson the answer for the Philadelphia Flyers?
Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

Frank Seravalli was joined by former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton to discuss the Philadelphia Flyers’ crease and whether Sam Ersson can be a starter in the NHL on the latest episode of Daily Faceoff Live.

Frank Seravalli: We wanted to ask you about Sam Ersson with the Philadelphia Flyers. Everyone’s attention has been focused on the Flyers’ crease since Carter Hart took his leave of absence and was charged with sexual assault in London, Ontario. But when you look at Ersson, a guy who kind of burst onto the scene, not really heralded but they’ve asked him to do a lot and he’s played pretty well. Is he a guy you think can grow into a legit 1A or is he just a temporary stop-gap solution for the Flyers?

Carter Hutton: I think he has the potential to be a 1A, he kind of gives me the Karel Vejmelka feel. Kind of came in out of nowhere, solid, simplified his game. For me, this last three games have been important. Carter Hart’s gone, it’s his crease now and he’s won his last three, gave up a few last night but in those three wins beating Winnipeg, beating Florida some teams that are really good.

And this is a big measuring stick for him. For me its that feel of when I was breaking in when you get those big games and finding ways to get wins, it builds your confidence and build his mental standpoint. I think he has a chance to help this young team solidify this net while they go through this struggles with Carter Hart being gone.

Frank Seravalli: It was really interesting to hear Keith Jones, the Flyers’ president of hockey operations say on a podcast last week that they’ve got three Russian goalies that are on the way, including some sooner rather than later. So, the Flyers have some reinforcements coming and they’ve spent a lot of draft capital trying to beef up that position.
