'I had no idea': Penguins' Sidney Crosby ties one legend, passes another

Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby continues to make history at age 36.

On Wednesday night in Montreal, Crosby continued his dominance against the team he rooted for growing up.

It is always special when Crosby returns to Montreal, but this time he made history in the process. Crosby recorded the 1,533rd point of his career, tying Mark Recchi for 13th on the NHL's all-time points list.

Crosby spoke with reporters after the game about what it meant to tie Recchi on the points list.

"I had no idea. It goes by really quick," Crosby said about his career. "To be in company with Rex, having played with him, having watched him here (in Montreal), I know the type of career he had and how good he was, how consistent he was.

Crosby's three-point performance allowed him to pass Hockey Hall of Fame defenseman Paul Coffey on the NHL all-time points list.

It is amazing what Crosby is doing at his age. He is still one of the best players in the game and shows no signs of slowing down. Even though the Penguins are a borderline playoff team, Crosby is putting this team on his back.

Crosby has 31 points (17 goals and 14 assists) in 28 games with the Penguins this season. If Crosby keeps this pace up, he could finish the season with 94 points and 50 goals. So there is a good chance he could pass even more hockey legends along the way.

Crosby is just six points away from tying Joe Thornton (1,539 points) for 12th place on the all-time points list.  He also has a good chance to pass Hockey Hall of Famer Ray Bourque (1,579 points) this season.

Per Josh Yohe of The Athletic, Crosby knows what it means to be playing at this level at his age.

"You understand how hard you have o work to play at this level," he explained. The guys that are coming in, they're so skilled and so fast. It's not easy. A lot of work goes into it.

The Penguins are starting to heat up behind Crosby as they won a wild game 4-3 in a 12-round shootout over the Canadiens.
