Forwards Seth Griffith and James Hamblin clear waivers, assigned to AHL Condors
Stephen Brashear-USA TODAY Sports

Both players that the Edmonton Oilers placed on waivers on Tuesday for the purpose of assignment to the American Hockey League cleared through unclaimed. Forwards Seth Griffith and James Hamblin will report to the Bakersfield Condors.

Griffith was selected by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round of the 2012 draft and has 80 games of NHL experience. He inked a two-year, two-way contract with the Oilers in free agency in October of 2020 and scored 40 goals and 108 points across 103 games for the Condors. The Oilers re-signed Griffith to another two-year, two-way contract last summer and he led Bakersfield in points with 60 in 2022-23.

Hamblin was signed by the Oilers as an undrafted free agent after he scored 36 goals and 92 points for the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL in 2019-20. The Edmonton native spent the shortened 2021 season and the 2021-22 seasons with the Condors and made his NHL debut in 2022-23. He scored 28 points across 58 AHL games and was held off the scoresheet in 10 games in the NHL.

The team still has 14 forwards, 11 defencemen, and three goaltenders on their training camp roster, so a few more players will need to go through waivers before the beginning of the regular season. Some names to watch will be forwards Raphael Lavoie and Lane Pederson, defencemen Ben Gleason, Phil Kemp, Cam Dineen and Markus Niemelainen, and goaltender Calvin Pickard.

The Oilers have two pre-season games left. They’re facing the Calgary Flames in Edmonton on Wednesday evening and then they’ll host the Seattle Kraken on Friday to wrap things up. Their first game of the regular season is on Wednesday, October 11 in Vancouver against the Canucks.
