Flyers Get It Right, Name Sean Couturier New Captain

The Philadelphia Flyers have officially named Sean Couturier as the 20th captain in team history, according to General Manager Daniel Briere and Head Coach John Tortorella. This announcement comes as a significant move for the franchise, signifying a new era of leadership and direction.

Why Couturier Will Be a Good Captain

Couturier has played center for the NHL’s Flyers since being drafted by the team in the first round (eighth overall), in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He’s highly regarded as a player and is known for his exceptional defensive abilities and versatility. He has consistently been one of the NHL’s top defensive forwards, who is often given the assignment of shutting down opponents’ top lines. His defensive responsibilities include penalty killing and crucial defensive zone faceoffs.

Although Couturier’s defensive abilities are his claim to NHL fame, he’s also a capable offensive player. He has demonstrated excellent playmaking skills and is capable of generating scoring chances for himself and his teammates. He has shown the ability to produce offensively while maintaining his defensive responsibilities. He’s twice been a 30-goal scorer and has put up 76 points two seasons in a row.

Couturier’s strong play has earned him recognition throughout his career. He’s received votes for the Frank J. Selke Trophy, awarded to the NHL’s best defensive forward, on several occasions. In the 2019-2020 season, he won the Selke Trophy.
