Former Flyer, Sami Kapanen, and former NCAA player, Kyle Shero, have been added to the Flyers’ Hockey Operations Staff today. Kapanen has been named as European Development & Pro Scout, while Shero will be an Amateur Scout.

Kapanen, 48, played for the Flyers from 2002-2008. He registered 110 points (44G, 66A) in 311 regular season games, and 19 points (9G, 10A) in 53 playoff games.

Kapanen spent time with KalPa in the Finnish League after his NHL career. He saw himself in many different roles with the organization. These roles included: player, assistant coach, head coach, general manager, and owner. He was then the head coach for HC Lugano in Switzerland for one season (2019-2020).

Kapanen was a member of the Finnish National Team on multiple occasions. He represented the Fins during the 1994 (bronze), 1998 (bronze), and 2002 Olympic Games, and also during the 1994 (silver), 1995 (gold), 1998 (silver), and 2001 (silver) IIHF World Championships.

Kapanen has two sons, Kasperi and Konsta. Kasperi currently plays for the Pittsburgh Penguins, while Konsta plays for KalPa.

Kyle Shero is the grandson of former Flyers coach, Fred Shero, and son of former NHL general manager, Ray Shero.

Shero, 23, played at Connecticut College for the previous four years. He will be mainly scouting players in the New England region, which includes high school, junior, and NCAA talents.
