Five NHL Saturday bets: Sides, totals and props

24 teams hit the ice today in the NHL, and we've whittled down the looks to just five bets. We have a grab-bag of plays for every type of bettor, from sides to props to totals.

.5u: NYR +1.5/OTT +1.5 (+140 MGM)

Bumping this down to a half-unit play simply because of the two legs needed, but I like both of New York and Ottawa today.

I want to take them each to win, but will rein it back a bit and load up their pucklines in a reasonable parlay.

New York's power play has been a high volume shot machine, and given how often Dallas has been penalized this year, the Rangers are going to get plenty of chances to bury the puck. Both goalies are phenomenal in this one, but I'm intrigued by Stars netminder Jake Oettinger allowing six goals the last time he saw New York. This should be a close one.

Then we get to Ottawa, a team I like to keep the Panthers on their toes. The Senators power play has been rolling of late, notching five power play goals in their past five. Florida is allowing the seventh-most power plays per game and own one of the league's worst penalty-killing units.

Knowing this conceivable edge awaits, I think Ottawa could win, but at minimum keep this within a one-score game.

Auston Matthews over 4.5 SOG (+100 DK)

The hope here is that Auston Matthews is about to go on a run. Matthews has 12 SOG over his past two games and is averaging 9.6 attempts per game over his last five.

Matthews will get the Kings today, a team with shots allowed and penalty issues, making this a great spot to look for Toronto shots on goal.

Matthews had 11 SOG when he last saw Los Angeles, and he's over this 4.5 total in five of eight this year. Guys like this tend to stack games in a row, let's ride the wave at even-money.

.5u: Brent Burns assist (+112 FD)

Brent Burns looks like an awesome option for shots tonight. He's shooting like crazy and Philly is allowing the second-most shots per game to defensemen. He also had five and six SOG against the Flyers last season.

So, why go to his assist? It's just a personal preference for me, but seeing how involved Burns is in this offense makes me confident a point is coming, and I'd prefer the assist angle for the defensemen. Maybe it's someone putting in his rebound, or deflecting one of his shot attempts, this volume is speaking to me.

Burns has four assists in his last five games and had three assists the last time he saw Philadelphia.

Matty Beniers point (-118 FD)

Matty Beniers has been rolling for Seattle, scoring a goal in three straight games. I came very close to betting him to score at +305, but then I thought I'd check what his odds are for a point, and I can't believe we're getting this at -118.

Beniers has a point in 15 of 19 career games, and now gets a Pittsburgh team allowing 3.3 goals per game and on the second-night of a back-to-back.

Seattle has been scoring steady this season, averaging 3.3 scores per game and shooting the puck nearly 33 times on average. Grabbing the Kraken's top-line center at extremely reasonable odds.

EDM-CGY over 6.5 goals (-120 MGM)

It's always a wise idea to consider the over when we've got the Battle of Alberta on our hands. Since the beginning of last season, the total has exceeded 6.5 goals in eight of ten meetings between these two teams.

Both Edmonton and Calgary have had penalty issues to start the year, and an excess of power plays will only help the cause here.
