Disturbing alleged details of Alex Galchenyuk arrest emerge from police report

A new report released by the Scottsdale Police Department on Friday shed some additional light on the alleged circumstances leading up to ex-Arizona Coyotes forward Alex Galchenyuk’s arrest on July 9.

Galchenyuk, 29, was officially released by the Coyotes on Friday just 13 days after signing a one-year deal with the club. The Coyotes placed Galchenyuk on unconditional waivers on Thursday morning but did not officially comment until Friday.

According to The Athletic‘s Katie Strang, the Scottsdale Police Department has laid multiple charges against Galchenyuk, including private property hit-and-run, disorderly conduct, failure to obey, resisting arrest and threatening or intimidating.

The police report on the incident, which has been obtained by Daily Faceoff, includes detailed accounts from each of the officers who arrived at the scene, where a white BMW X5 crossover had been observed striking a curb, a sign and another vehicle in a Scottsdale parking lot.

According to the police report, at the time the officers arrived, Galchenyuk was “laying on the ground” near the car with “heavily slurred speech, blood shot watery eyes and an odor of alcohol.” He became “curt and profane” when asked routine questions by an officer.

Galchenyuk was accompanied by his father, also named Alexander, at the scene. During the initial encounter with police and in transport to the station, the younger Galchenyuk allegedly made numerous threatening statements toward the responding officers, including:

“You understand I will chop all of you f–ks.”

“I’m [gonna] chop you, your wife, and your daughter.”

“I will kill your wife, your daughters, and call Moscow and have their livers removed.”

“Let me go or I will make one phone call. You’ll never see your family, how scary is that?”

“One phone call and you’re all dead, your whole family, your whole blood line is dead.”

One of the responding officers wrote in the report that Galchenyuk repeatedly used a racial slur to describe an African American officer at the scene.

The African American officer wrote in the report that he asked Galchenyuk “not to refer to me using that term” but that he “continued to say that derogatory meaning and [threatening] violence on to me until arriving to the District 2 jail.”

The Coyotes released the following statement after officially releasing Galchenyuk on Friday morning:

“We are aware of the incident involving Alex Galchenyuk and strongly condemn this type of behavior. Once the Club was made aware of the allegations, we immediately began the process of terminating his Standard Player’s Contract through the proper channels in conjunction with the National Hockey League. As a result, the Arizona Coyotes today have exercised the team’s right to terminate the contract of Alex Galchenyuk due to a material breach of the terms of his Standard Player’s Contract. The Club will have no further comment at this time.”

Galchenyuk is now an unrestricted free agent after being released by the Coyotes. According to Strang, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the Coyotes consulted with the league while determining whether to terminate Galchenyuk’s contract.

The Montreal Canadiens originally selected Galchenyuk with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2012 NHL Draft. The Madison, Wisconsin, product has collected 146 goals and 354 points in 654 career NHL games with the Canadiens, Coyotes, Pittsburgh Penguins, Minnesota Wild, Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs.
