Devils rifle off 5 unanswered goals to blast Red Wings
Tim Fuller-USA TODAY Sports

Dougie Hamilton, Jack Hughes, Alexander Holtz and Nico Hischier all had a goal and an assist to lead the New Jersey Devils to a 5-1 road win over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night.

Miles Wood had two assists and Vitek Vanecek made 32 saves in goal for New Jersey, which has won both games against the Red Wings in Detroit this year.

Following a scoreless first period, the Devils opened the scoring with 10:43 left in the second on a power-play goal by Hamilton, who fired a shot from above the faceoff circles that beat Detroit goalie Ville Husso to the stick side after the Devils won the draw.

New Jersey then took a 2-0 lead with 3:40 left in the second on another power-play goal, this time by Hischier. As he did on his earlier goal, Hamilton skated toward the Detroit goal from near the blue line and fired a shot from just above the faceoff circles, but this time it was tipped in by Hischier.

In the third period, the Devils took a 3-0 lead with 18:09 remaining when Michael McLeod took a pass from Holtz at the edge of the left faceoff circle and buried the chance into an open goal after Husso vacated the net to stop a two-on-one opportunity.

New Jersey then grabbed a 4-0 lead with 13:20 remaining when Holtz entered the Detroit zone with speed, took a pass from Wood and wristed a shot off the post and in.

The Devils went up 5-0 with 6:01 left on an unassisted goal by Hughes, who banked in a shot from behind the Detroit goal that went off the stick of Detroit's Pius Suter and Husso's back.

Detroit broke up the shutout with exactly 2:00 remaining on a goal by Lucas Raymond.

Husso finished with 22 saves for the Red Wings.
