Dallas Stars sign Joel Hanley and Craig Smith; trade Colin Miller

The Dallas Stars have been one of the busiest teams on the market Saturday.

The club has announced the signings of defenseman Joel Hanley to a two-year contract worth $787,500 and forward Craig Smith to a one-year, $1 million deal.

Hanley was a solid depth defenseman for the Stars this year, with the 32-year-old recording two assists in 26 games. Hanley started his NHL career with six assists in 10 games with Montreal in 2015-16 before getting a seven-game stint the following year. Hanley moved over to Arizona in 2017-18 where he had zero points in five games before embarking on his current tenure with Dallas.

Smith, 33, was drafted 98th overall by the Nashville Predators in 2009. He spent nine years with the club before Boston picked him up for a three-year stint starting in 2021. He was traded to Washington late last year and had five goals and six points down the stretch in the deal that sent Dmitri Orlov to Boston. Smith had a career-high 25 goals and 51 points for the Predators back in 2017-18.

In a cap-dumping move, the Stars traded defenseman Colin Miller to the New Jersey Devils for a 2025 fifth-round pick. Miller has one more year on his deal worth $1.85 million.

The Stars have $5.207 million in projected cap space with just RFA Ty Dellandrea left to sign.
