Carolina Hurricanes sign Scott Morrow to entry-level contract

Carolina Hurricanes president of hockey operations and general manager Don Waddell announced Tuesday that the Canes have agreed to terms with Scott Morrow on a three-year, entry level contract.

The contract will have an average annual value (AAV) of $807,500 at the NHL level in 2023-24 and $832,500 at the NHL level in 2024-25 and 2025-26. Morrow will receive $80,000 at the American Hockey League (AHL) level for all three seasons, and the deal will include a signing bonus of $277,500.

Morrow was oringally selected No. 40 overall in the 2021 NHL Draft by the Hurricanes.

“Scott is a dynamic, offensive-minded defenseman who has consistently been one of the top-performing blueliners in college hockey,” said Waddell. “He has shown the drive and dedication to graduate in three years, and we look forward to seeing the next steps in his development.”

Morrow spent the 2023-24 campaign with UMass in the NCAA where he compiled six goals and 24 assists for 30 points in 37 games. He ranked third in scoring among Hockey East defensemen and earned conference Third-Team All-Star honors.

The 21-year-old spent three seasons with the Minutemen, notching 28 goals and 66 assists for 94 points in 109 career NCAA games. Morrow led all Hockey East defensemen in goals and points as a freshman during the 2021-22 campaign, earning selection to the conference’s First All-Star Team and becoming the first freshman in program history to receive First-Team All-American honors. Morrow is the first defenseman to reach the 30-point mark in three different seasons at UMass.

Prior to his NCAA tenure, the Darien, Conneticut product spent time with Shattuck St. Mary’s Prep School and the Fargo Force of the United States Hockey League (USHL). He tallied 40 assists and 48 points in 30 games during the 2020-21 season with Shattuck.
