Canucks GM Patrik Allvin says Tanner Pearson is preparing to be ready for training camp
Bob Frid-USA TODAY Sports

It wasn’t a long quote, but it was a hell of a surprise when Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin spoke about the current health of Tanner Pearson.

The last we have heard about Pearson has come from Rick Dhaliwal’s reporting as he has said on Donnie & Dhali that Pearson has had six or seven surgeries on his hand so far.

On Wednesday, Allvin dropped a surprising note on Pearson, when he said, “the indication that I have got is that his hand is healing,” said Allvin. “He’s preparing himself to be ready for training camp.”

We are flat out shocked that Pearson is preparing himself to be ready for training camp. It felt that the original hand injury wasn’t the thing that was going to keep him out long-term — it was actually the surgeries that made this longer than it had to be. Our belief was that his career was in jeopardy, not that he was going to be preparing for training camp this fall.

Pearson’s NHLPA boss Marty Walsh is well aware of the situation with Pearson and recently was on Donnie & Dhali, speaking about the situation.

Pearson is in the final year of his three-year, $9,750,000 contract that was signed by Jim Benning back in April of 2021. If he is not able to be ready for training camp, we assume he will remain on long-term injury reserve to begin the season.

We always hope for the best with injuries and hope that Pearson can get back to full health at some point in the coming years. It’s hard to believe all of the things Pearson has had to endure since injuring his hand back in November of 2022. It’s kind of hard to remember but believe it or not, Pearson played in 14 games last year before the injury, posting just one goal and four assists in his 14 games.

He has not played for Rick Tocchet just yet and is a veteran presence around the locker room. He’s just a guy who gets along with everyone in the room and has a Stanley Cup to his name as well.

Pearson has 55 goals and 59 assists through 221 games with the Canucks. He has also been traded twice by current Canucks president Jim Rutherford back when he was a GM.

Would you be shocked to see number 70 show up for training camp at full health? We sure would!
