Bruins' Charlie McAvoy, Matt Grzelcyk to miss start of 2022-23 season

The Boston Bruins have shared plenty of bad news with fans since they suffered a first-round playoff elimination at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes last month.

Last week, the Bruins confirmed that star forward Brad Marchand is expected to be out for six months and, thus, will miss the start of the 2022-23 NHL season after he underwent hip arthroscopy and labral repair on both hips. Ahead of the first full weekend in June, Boston provided updates on three others.

According to the team release, defenseman Matt Grzelcyk underwent a right shoulder open stabilization procedure on Friday and is likely to miss five months. Fellow defenseman Charlie McAvoy underwent a left shoulder arthroscopic stabilization and is on track to be sidelined for six months. Those timelines should keep both out of action through the start of next season.

Per ESPN stats, Grzelcyk tallied four goals and 20 assists across 73 regular-season games. McAvoy, meanwhile, contributed 10 goals and 46 assists in 78 contests.

Marchand led the team with 48 assists and 80 points. He was second among Boston players with 32 goals in 70 games.

Additionally, defenseman Mike Reilly underwent a right ankle tendon repair and removal of bone fragments but is expected to recover in around three months.
