Who will Jim Harbaugh's first pick as Chargers HC be?

The Chargers hired Jim Harbaugh as their next head coach on Wednesday, which should have fans hopeful for the future. With the No. 5 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Los Angeles will have plenty of options.

Who will be Harbaugh's first pick as the new HC? Here are three players he and his staff could consider drafting come April.

TE Brock Bowers, Georgia

Bowers is undoubtedly the best tight end prospect since Kyle Pitts was drafted No. 4 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. The Georgia product has played at a high level for the past three years (2021-23), posting 175 catches for 2,538 yards and 26 touchdowns.

The Chargers also have a need at tight end as veteran Gerald Everett will be a free agent after the season. Even if Everett returns on a cheap deal, however, adding Bowers to the mix makes sense. Everett had just 411 yards and three touchdowns in 2023. Bowers could give Los Angeles its most talented tight end since likely future Hall of Famer Antonio Gates.

WR Rome Odunze, Washington

If the Chargers want to add to QB Justin Herbert's wide receiver core instead, they could select Odunze. The Washington product is draft expert Daniel Jeremiah's "favorite player in the draft" after posting 167 catches for 2,785 yards and 20 touchdowns from 2022-23.

Adding Odunze would also allow Los Angeles to move on from veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen or Mike Williams if the team struggles to stay under the cap. After whiffing on WR Quentin Johnston (431 yards, two touchdowns) last year, Odunze could be the perfect rebound pick.

WR Malik Nabers, LSU

Nabers would be another solid selection if Odunze is somehow gone or the Chargers want to move down in the draft to acquire more picks. The LSU product had an impressive 89 receptions for 1,569 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2023.

The 6-foot, 200-pound wide receiver actually ranks above Odunze as the No. 4 overall prospect on Pro Football Focus' big board. But Odunze has been projected to hear his name called before Nabers in the latest mock drafts.

Whichever way Harbaugh and the Chargers' new regime decide to go, an exciting new era is about to begin in Los Angeles. One of the above players could be a big reason why.
