What adding edge-rusher Haason Reddick means for Jets

The New York Jets made a massive trade on Friday, acquiring Pro Bowl edge-rusher Haason Reddick from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a conditional 2026 third-round pick.

It's another substantial addition for the Jets this offseason, but it's arguably the most significant move they've made on defense. With that in mind, let's take a look at what Reddick brings to the table.

Jets are adding an elite pass-rusher in Reddick

The eight-year veteran is among the best edge-rushers in the league and should make an immediate impact along the defensive line. Since 2020, only Trey Hendrickson (53), Myles Garrett (58) and T.J. Watt (62) have more sacks than Reddick's 50.5.

Meanwhile, nearing 30, Reddick has been a model of consistency. He's recorded four straight double-digit sack seasons, including a career-high 16 in 2022 and 11 in 2023 with the Eagles.

Jets are getting a motivated Reddick in a low-risk, high-reward situation

Reddick hasn't agreed on a contract extension with the Jets, though reports indicate that could happen at some point. But if the two-time Pro Bowler enters the season without a deal, he'll be motivated to get one, whether with the Jets or another team when he hits free agency next offseason.

In the meantime, the Jets will reap the benefits. Should Reddick go crazy in 2024, it's a win-win situation that may convince the franchise to dole out the cash to keep him. Then again, if he doesn't work out, they let him walk at the cost of a third-round pick with the potential to gain a compensatory pick back when he signs elsewhere.

Reddick should help the Jets line in more ways than one

Obviously, adding a talented player like Reddick to any team is an upgrade. However, his presence could lead to a bounce-back year for All-Pro lineman Quinnen Williams, who saw his sack totas drop from 12.0 in 2022 to 5.5 in 2023.

Also, Reddick's influence in the locker room and on the practice field will be invaluable. This is especially true for former first-round picks Jermaine Johnson and Will McDonald, who could take their games to the next level with the veteran's help.
