'We've Got To Hit On It!' Broncos' Sean Payton Reveals Hint On Denver's Possible First-Round Pick

The Denver Broncos have been at the forefront of quarterback controversy ever since head coach Sean Payton arrived before the 2023 season.

Most of that controversy surrounded quarterback Russell Wilson, whom Payton did not see eye-to-eye with. Against that backdrop, Wilson was shipped off to Pittsburgh to join the Steelers via trade.

On Thursday, during media availability, Payton was asked if the Broncos will be looking at a quarterback with the No. 12 pick in next week's NFL Draft.

"You’d say, 'Man, it sure looks like we have to draft a quarterback.' And yet it’s got to be the right fit, the right one," Payton said. "If we had tip sheets as to who everyone else was taking, it would be easier to answer that question. And so, that’s the puzzle here."

But Payton also realizes they don't want to "force" the pick if it's not there for the taking.

“Otherwise we'll be in this position next year and the years after," Paton said. "You want to get the right player at 12. Our first pick, we’ve got to hit on. Whether it’s a quarterback, whether it's a tackle or receiver, you name it. We need to get an impact player."
