Gregg Williams responds to OBJ's claims of targeting

A day after Cleveland Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. blasted New York Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams for a history of Williams’ defense targeting players with dirty hits, Williams fired back on Friday.

When first asked by reporters about Beckham Jr.’s comments, Williams quipped back with “Odell who?” then said his defenses have never had a history of doing anything to ever intentionally injure an opponent.

“We don’t do that,” Williams said. “Never done that anywhere I’ve been. We don’t do anything to hurt the team. It’s the number one primary thing. ... You guys are cooperating, giving him attention. Just don’t give him attention. It just is what it is.”

Williams’ comments are in sharp contrast to his known role in the Bountygate scandal during his time with the New Orleans Saints and his own defense of his actions.

New York’s defensive coordinator also blamed the media for cooperating with Beckham Jr. by giving him attention for the comments he made. Williams kept slamming Beckham Jr. by downplaying his status as one of the most dynamic players in the league by citing the New York Giants trading him as proof he isn’t dynamic.

This probably won’t be the last time these two speak publicly about each other. Given both of their reputations, it will almost certainly carry over into primetime when Williams’ defense faces Beckham Jr. on Monday Night Football.
