Washington finally adds an insurance for struggling kicker Dustin Hopkins

The once reliable Dustin Hopkins has been shaky as of late as the Washington Football Team placekicker. Last season, he struggled, making a career-low 79.4% of his field goals.

His troubles were highlighted by kicking from distance. Six of his seven misses were from 40 or more yards. But, Washington head coach Ron Rivera stayed confident. So much so, the team didn’t bring in any competition for Hopkins during training camp.

Yet, Hopkins continued to struggle in preseason. He was 4-of-7 on field goal attempts. More importantly he was 1-for-4 on kicks over 35 yards. That included a horrible miss that looked to be blocked from 55 yards.

Rivera still maintained confidence in Hopkins. However, the team has at least brought in some insurance, signing former Chicago Bears kicker Eddy Pineiro to the practice squad.

Pineiro isn’t considered to be competition for Hopkins, according to ESPN’s John Keim. But having a second kicker in-house at least adds a layer to the kicking situation.

COVID-19 and injuries concerns may be the main reason for bringing in Pineiro, yet, it’s hard to not overlook the positives of having him there.

He emerged as an undrafted rookie in 2019 for the Bears. He made 82.1% of his field goals and 93.7% of his extra points through 16 games. However, his progress was stunted last year with a groin injury that forced him on injured reserve for the entire season.

Pineiro signed with the Indianapolis Colts this offseason. But he lost out to Rodrigo Blankenship. Now he lands in Washington as an insurance policy.

If Hopkins’ struggles continue, Rivera has an option right over his shoulder. Don’t hesitate to think Rivera hasn’t considered that regardless of what’s been put out about Pineiro’s signing.

It’s a safe way to say Hopkins needs to improve without saying Hopkins needs to improve. Washington is confident Hopkins will get back on track. But, they’ve at least taken precaution for all possibilities.
