Vikings announce roster moves and elevations for Sunday's game
USA TODAY Sports

The Vikings have announced a few roster moves and practice squad elevations for Sunday's season opener against the Buccaneers.

Running back Myles Gaskin, who was released on Friday, was — as expected — signed to the practice squad and elevated to the gameday roster. The fifth-year veteran will serve as the Vikings' No. 3 running back against Tampa Bay. The Vikings will presumably re-sign Gaskin to the active roster next week, but his season salary now isn't guaranteed because he wasn't officially on the roster for Week 1.

To make room on the practice squad, wide receiver Lucky Jackson was released. The former XFL standout may end up quickly re-signing to the practice squad if Gaskin gets his roster spot back soon.

Along with Gaskin, outside linebacker Benton Whitley was elevated from the practice squad for Sunday's game. The third-year Holy Cross product had some nice moments in training camp and the preseason and will provide some additional depth at OLB behind Danielle Hunter, Marcus Davenport, Pat Jones II, and D.J. Wonnum. Special teams work is a possibility. If Whitley sees the field at all, it'll be his NFL regular season debut.

The Vikings will announce their inactive player list at 10:30 a.m. central time before the noon kickoff. Rookie quarterback Jaren Hall will be active without counting towards the 48-player limit, thanks to the league's new third-QB rule.
