Veteran RB Devonta Freeman, Saints agree to one-year deal

The New Orleans Saints are reuniting veteran running back Devonta Freeman with his former college teammate Jameis Winston.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Saints signed Freeman to a one-year deal after hosting him for a visit on Saturday.

Freeman spent six seasons with the Atlanta Falcons before joining the New York Giants in 2020. The 29-year-old appeared in just five games for the G-Men last season before suffering an ankle injury. He ran for 172 yards and a touchdown while adding seven catches for 58 yards.

Freeman joins a running back group in New Orleans that is headlined by Alvin Kamara. The team also has Latavius Murray, Tony Jones Sr., Stevie Scott III and Dwayne Washington under contract.

With Drew Brees in retirement and star wide receiver Michael Thomas set to miss the beginning of the 2021 campaign, the Saints are expected to rely more heavily on the running game.

If Freeman makes the 53-man roster, he'll face his former team for the first time in Week 9. The Saints finish the regular season at Atlanta in Week 18.
