Tyrann Mathieu 'heartbroken' after not receiving contract offer from Chiefs

Free-agent safety Tyrann Mathieu was not offered a contract to stay with the Kansas City Chiefs, according to Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star.

"Bro, I was depressed," Mathieu told the Kansas City Star. "Heartbroken. Heart. Broken. I could not understand it. I could not, man."

On March 14, the Kansas City Chiefs signed safety Justin Reid to a three-year, $31.5 million contract. The move signaled a changing of the guard at safety for the Chiefs, a spot Mathieu occupied for the last three seasons.

McDowell says the Chiefs elected not to offer Mathieu a contract, opting to sign safety Reid instead. Mathieu hinted that he would have accepted the offer Reid was given.

"To be honest," Mathieu said. "If they would've offered me Justin Reid's deal, obviously I would've tried to negotiate, but if that's where they drew their line in the sand, I probably would've took it. I probably would've took it."

In 2019, Mathieu signed a three-year, $42 million contract with the Chiefs. Over the deal's life, Mathieu helped lead the Chiefs to a win in Super Bowl LIV, was selected to the Pro Bowl two times and was named a First-Team All-Pro twice.

In 47 games with Kansas City, Mathieu started all 47 contests, finishing with 213 total tackles, 13 interceptions and three sacks.

While Mathieu won't be heading back to Kansas City, he does have plenty of interest from teams looking to buy in the free-agent market. Mathieu visited the New Orleans Saints before a virtual visit with the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this week.
