Tony Romo: 49ers offense 'a bonus' for Trey Lance

NFL Network's Brian Baldinger and Tony Romo of CBS Sports are among those who believe the San Francisco 49ers will ultimately receive some worthwhile compensation for veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo once other signal-callers begin to get banged up during summer practices and preseason games.

Garoppolo is still with the 49ers today but, by most accounts, has been replaced atop the depth chart by 2021 rookie Trey Lance ahead of training camp. During his Wednesday appearance on "The Zach Gelb Show," Romo explained why he's convinced Lance will find success playing in an offense run by San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan.

"I think anybody in the Kyle Shanahan [or] Sean McVay world is going to have a chance to succeed at the quarterback position," Romo remarked, per David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone. "I think these guys allow your team to have advantages, so I think that's going to help a lot. Really, they run the football, set up these play-action passes that get people wide open, so you're always going to have at least two or three chunk plays that [other teams won't] get. And that's going to be 50 to 75 to 100 yards a game on stuff that comes from coaching. That's a bonus for Lance."

As a first-year pro, Lance threw just 71 passes, and he completed 41 (57.7%) of those attempts for 603 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions. That's undeniably a small sample size, but Romo added that learning from the sidelines may prove to be a blessing for the 22-year-old and his employer.

"I do think there's growing pains for any young quarterback," Romo said during his comments. "Him not playing too much too early, I think, is always beneficial when you can wait."

Garoppolo has been linked in updated trade rumors with the Seattle Seahawks, Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans, but all three may still be waiting to see if the 49ers will cut the 30-year-old before training camp opens on July 26.
