Three keys for Giants QB Tommy DeVito to beat the Eagles

According to Dan Salomone of Giants.com, a win against the Eagles on Christmas Day would make New York’s Tommy DeVito the first undrafted rookie quarterback in the Common Draft Era (since 1967) to win at least four games. Here's how he can do it.

1. Lean on Saquon Barkley

The Giants running back isn’t having his best year, but he’s still their best player. With the next three games likely Barkley’s last with the team, DeVito must hand him the ball early and often. In the quarterback’s three wins, Barkley averaged 15.3 carries and 71.6 yards per game. In last week’s loss to the Saints, he had nine carries for 14 yards.

Barkley hasn’t had much success against Philadelphia in his career, and that’s something he’d like to change before he leaves town.

When asked about the team’s recent struggles against Philadelphia, Barkley told the Associated Press, "I don't think that sits well in anybody's stomach. I don't think that sits well if you've been here for a long time.”

DeVito would do well to get him the ball and keep the Eagles’ seventh-ranked scoring offense on the sidelines.

2. Find his young receivers

Darius Slayton’s 63 yards couldn’t get the Giants past the Saints last week. Still, receivers Wan’Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt were critical to wins against the Packers and Patriots.

Robinson had six catches for 79 yards in the team’s win over Green Bay and Hyatt’s five catches for 109 yards helped New York beat New England in Week 12. Philadelphia’s secondary gives up the fifth-most passing yards in the NFL and will be without Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay for the second straight week.

If Hyatt gets behind Philadelphia’s coverage, no one on their defense can compete with his 4.40 speed. At the very least, a few deep shots from DeVito should open up the field against a banged-up, subpar secondary.

3. Run

DeVito has been sacked an unbelievable 35 times in just seven games. The Eagles’ front four doesn’t get to the quarterback like they used to, but he needs to get out of the pocket the moment he feels any pressure on Monday afternoon.

The rookie quarterback surprised everyone by rushing for 71 yards against Green Bay and averaged nine yards per rush last week against the Saints. He has wheels. Why not get out of harm's way and make it part of the game plan?

Two backup quarterbacks (Drew Lock and Zach Wilson) have already beaten the Philadelphia Eagles. With these three things, DeVito could be the next.
