Thomas Morstead Offseason: 1-Arm Pull-ups, Return to Jets?

After completing his 15th season in the NFL, New York Jets punter Thomas Morstead has a lot planned in the months ahead.

The free agent specialist will hit the ski slopes for a family vacation in Colorado while also attempting to conquer some non-punting related physical challenges.

"I love lifting. This year, I want to be able to do a one-arm pull-up," said Morstead who has earned more money salary-wise than any other NFL punter over the course of his career. "It's something that tells me I'm getting stronger and gives me something to work towards."

Set to turn 38 years old on March 8, Morstead intends to continue what has been a storied career as a professional in 2024, and he's interested in doing it as a Jet.

"I had a great exit interview with the team. I know they want me back and I'd be excited to be back," said Morstead.

There's likely mutual interest between both parties to get a deal done when the time comes. After all, Morstead was one of the team's most consistent performers throughout the 2023 campaign. He set single-season franchise records for gross punting average (48.8) and net punting average (41.8).

If the Jets are to re-sign Morstead, it can't happen until the new league year kicks off on March 13 due to the fact that the fan favorite played on a "veteran salary benefit" deal in 2023.

"It's kind of unique, the fact I can't sign a contract until free agency starts," said the native Texan, who has since taken up residency in Louisiana as a result of spending 12 years with the New Orleans Saints. "I'd love to be back. I had a great experience, family loved being there [in New Jersey]. We'll see what happens."

"My eyes are squarely on being back with the Jets. I'm very hopeful that that happens," said Morstead. "Hopefully, we have some more good times together, and, hopefully there are better times as well."

Morstead was busy in 2023, booting an NFL-high 99 punts for a league-leading 4,831 gross yards.
