Tashaun Gipson Sr. Named Best Match For Jets In NFL Free Agency
Darren Yamashita-USA TODAY Sports

All of the focus around the New York Jets right now is on their pursuit of quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Everything they are doing is connected to him, as even the free agents that they have talked to are all in an effort to acquire the future Hall of Famer from the Green Bay Packers.

Rodgers reportedly provided a list of players to the Jets that he would like them to sign before he agrees to join the team. One player, Allen Lazard, has already agreed to a four-year, $44 million deal with Gang Green.

The other players on the list are Randall Cobb, Marcedes Lewis and Odell Beckham Jr. It will be a challenge fitting Beckham onto the roster given how much money he is looking to earn. If it helps land Rodgers, though, Joe Douglas will do whatever he needs to do as there isn’t a clear fit for Cobb or Lewis either.

With so much attention on Rodgers, the Jets are taking a major risk. There are other players that the team could be pursuing to round out their roster, but they are in a gridlock until there is a resolution with a trade.

Once that is squared away, New York could turn their attention to the defensive side of the ball. With Lamarcus Joyner likely leaving in free agency, there is a hole in their secondary. Looking to fill that void, the perfect fit in free agency for the Jets would be Tashaun Gispon Sr.

Gipson spent last season with the San Francisco 49ers and played very well. He recorded 61 total tackles with one tackle for a loss and one quarterback hit to go along with five interceptions and eight passes defended.

His transition to the Jets’ defense would be a rather seamless one as Gipson spent the majority of 2022 playing deep safety, which Joyner did for New York. He was very steady, as SIS’ counted him as only having five missed or broken tackles last season. His performance in coverage was also excellent, giving up only an average of 2.8 yards after the catch.

The Jets have one of the best young defenses in the NFL and adding a veteran of Gipson’s caliber to the mix would help them stay on that track. He is a playmaker at the back end of the defense, something the Jets could use more of after registering only 12 interceptions last season.
