Steelers’ Mike Tomlin Detailed His Future Coaching Plans In Pittsburgh: 'It Has Intensified'
Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers have maintained a remarkable streak under Mike Tomlin's leadership, never enduring a losing season during his 17-year tenure as head coach. Their consistent winning record stands as a testament to his prowess in the competitive realm of the NFL. However, despite this achievement, the Steelers have not secured a playoff victory since the 2016 season under Tomlin.

As the toll of the 2023 season weighed on the 52-year-old Tomlin, some pundits speculated that his time in Pittsburgh might be nearing its end. There were suggestions that his strategies had become stale and that a mutual separation between both parties might be beneficial. However, Tomlin swiftly dispelled these rumors early in the offseason.

Tomlin sat down with Rob King for an interview to unpack the whirlwind of events that unfolded for Pittsburgh during the offseason. King concluded the discussion with a probing question, inquiring about Tomlin's future with the Steelers. King asked if Tomlin wants to remain the coach of the Steelers for the foreseeable future. With a broad smile and a hearty laugh, Tomlin responded.

“Haha, aye, absolutely. You know I love what I do. I love where I do it. I love who I do it with. And so I answered that question rather easily to be quite honest with you.”

Throughout the 2023 season, rumors and reports surfaced suggesting that Tomlin might entertain the idea of taking a break from coaching. Additionally, some Steelers fans voiced their desire for a change in head coaching. However, despite these speculations, Tomlin is unequivocally returning. He has no intention of stepping away anytime soon.

In 2021, Tomlin inked a three-year contract extension extending through 2024. He has conveyed his confidence that another extension will be negotiated during the 2024 season. Art Rooney II has also been forthcoming about his intentions to extend Tomlin's contract.

"Certainly, we have, you know, things like contracts and such to address. But just in spirit, in terms of what I do, the energy with which I approach it, the desire to get out of that car every day and step into that facility, it hasn't waned in any way. If anything, it has intensified," Tomlin continued.

While initial reports suggested that Tomlin would need time to contemplate his future, speculation arose that perhaps he had become weary. After all, he has dedicated 17 seasons to the Steelers and coached for a substantial period, prompting thoughts of a potential break on the horizon. However, such assumptions couldn't be further from the truth.

Tomlin is not only motivated, but more determined and eager than ever to guide and mentor his team. This news has sparked excitement among some Steelers fans, while others find themselves disheartened, realizing he will continue coaching for what appears to be several more seasons.

Steelers' Mike Tomlin Has A Lot Of Pressure In 2024

Tomlin kicked off his tenure with the Steelers on a high note, achieving early success as their head coach. In just his second season in 2008, he led the Steelers to a Super Bowl title—an accomplishment that not only ignited excitement, but also showcased tremendous potential for future triumphs. However, in the years that followed, the team's postseason performance has left something to be desired.

Despite making the playoffs 11 times under Tomlin, the Steelers have encountered mixed results, with a playoff record of eight wins and 10 losses. While they've maintained an above-average standing, the true measure of success in Pittsburgh is judged by Super Bowl victories, a realm where the team has recently been absent. They've struggled to advance in the playoffs, leaving fans hungry for more.

The pressure on Tomlin heading into the 2024 season is palpable, especially with star players like TJ Watt, who, despite his stellar contributions to the franchise, have yet to taste playoff victory. Tomlin is acutely aware of this pressure. With a defensively stacked roster and a skilled offense that requires refinement, the Steelers have the potential to exceed expectations in the upcoming season—a crucial factor in alleviating the scrutiny on Tomlin from fans.
