Some NFL executives, coaches still have doubts about 49ers QB

Despite an excellent rookie season, some aren't buying stock in 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.

On Monday, The Athletic's Mike Sando released his annual quarterback tiers. The tiers are numbered 1 through 5, with 5 being the worst. A combination of 50 league executives and coaches determine the ratings. Purdy landed in Tier 4 and ranked 24th out of 30 QBs.

"You put him on any other team, and they lose half their games," an offensive coach said of Purdy, via Sando. "They got the best rushing offense, they got the top defense, he doesn't make mistakes, and he makes some plays with his legs, he gets the ball out. Good for him."

Last season, the 49ers defense allowed the fewest points in the NFL, and it ranked seventh in rushing yards. So Purdy—the final pick (No. 262 overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft— benefitted from a strong supporting cast.

Yet, the 23-year-old impressed in nine games, throwing 13 TDs, completing 67.1 percent of his passes and posting a 107.3 passer rating. He also won playoff games against Seattle and Dallas, leading San Francisco to its second consecutive conference championship appearance.

Purdy could continue to grow and gain more respect throughout the league, becoming a highly-rated QB.

"When I looked at him, I thought he was a 4," another offensive coach said. "but when you watch the kid play, he is an absolute gamer. He has the intangibles, the moxie, the want-to and the leadership."

Per OddsChecker, the 49ers have the fourth-best Super Bowl odds this season. If Purdy leads them to their first title in 29 years, he will prove he's a legit franchise QB.
