Should the Cowboys move on from TE Dalton Schultz?

The Dalton Schultz decision looms over Dallas because the tight end is a solid offense component, but his asking price is too high.

"He wants top-of-the-TE-market-range money," wrote The Athletic's Bob Sturm.

The league's highest-paid TE is San Francisco's George Kittle, on a five-year deal with $15M in annual salary and $30M guaranteed, per Spotrac. So, Dallas must give Schultz a similar contract.

Although Schultz was second in receptions on Dallas (57), he lacks the dynamism of a Kittle or Travis Kelce, evident in Pro Bowl appearances. Kelce and Kittle have made four or more, while Schultz has made zero.

Plus, Dallas may be unable to cough up the money because it's $7.6M over the cap and may want to sign other key free agents like Pro Bowl RB Tony Pollard, LB Leighton Vander Esch and S Donovan Wilson.

It could use the franchise tag on Schultz again, giving him a one-year contract worth $13.1M.

However, the Cowboys may find a cheaper, younger option in the 2023 NFL Draft, loaded with talent, including Notre Dame's Michael Mayer, a consensus All-American.

"Mayer has nine TD catches this season -- 19th in the country and first among TEs -- before declaring for the Draft," wrote ESPN's Todd McShay.

Letting Schultz go is difficult, but it's a practical, financial call Dallas must make.
