Saints QB Jameis Winston carted off with knee injury vs. Buccaneers

The Saints were forced to turn to Trevor Siemian at quarterback after Jameis Winston suffered a left knee injury in the second quarter of New Orleans' Week 8 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Winston's knee appeared to twist underneath him at an odd angle when he was brought down by Buccaneers linebacker Devin White. He was helped off the field by trainers and later carted to the locker room.

White was assessed a 15-yard penalty on the play for a horse-collar tackle, and Siemian took over the drive on the next play.

Winston, 27, was signed by the Saints as a backup quarterback for Drew Brees in 2020, but took over in 2021 after Brees retired. In seven games entering today, Winston had thrown 14 touchdowns with only three interceptions. In five seasons with the Buccaneers, Winston threw 88 interceptions, including 30 in his final season with Tampa Bay.

Siemian started 24 games during a stint with the Denver Broncos and one game for the New York Jets in 2019.
