The first week of the preseason is upon us! The Packers kick off the preseason Friday night against the San Francisco 49ers. While many of the starters will be resting, there are some interesting things to watch for. The battle for back up safety is one to watch for in the Packers preseason game.

Battle For Back Up Safety

While the battle for back up safety may not seem very exciting, it could play a huge role in the Packers season. Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage are the starters but you never know what happens during the season. Savage is already dealing with a small hamstring issue. While it does not seem serious, there is always potential for injury during the season. At that point, the need for a solid backup is crucial. A lot of the starters will not play on Friday meaning that backups Vernon Scott and Shawn Davis will see many reps.

Vernon Scott

Vernon Scott has been the “starter” this week in training camp while Savage is nursing his hamstring injury. At Wednesday’s practice he made the play of the day. In the two minute drill, Rodgers threw deep to Sammy Watkins who had gotten passed his defender. Scott ranged from the middle of the field to get the toe tapping interception. Picking off Rodgers is no easy feat even in practice. Seeing this type of range and anticipation is exactly what you want to see out of a safety.

Shawn Davis

While Vernon Scott had the play of the day Wednesday, Shawn Davis also had a very good practice. He picked off Jordan Love on a great read. But Davis wasn’t done. On a throw to training camp star Romeo Doubs, Rodgers threw a little high and Davis was there for another interception. The defense for the Packers has been great but one area they could be better is catching interceptions. Many have been dropped or just missed. Seeing Davis get two interceptions in one practice is a welcome sight.

The Packers safety battle should be on full display on Friday night. The 49ers will want to see what new starter Trey Lance can do so the Packers should get good game reps. This battle among others will be something to watch during the Packers first preseason game.
