Rookie QB's 'eye-opening' highs giving Colts something to think about

The eye-popping plays of Colts rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson give him an edge in his battle with Gardner Minshew for the starting job.

"Richardson, as expected, has been up and down during training camp," wrote ESPN's Stephen Holder. "But his highs are always eye-opening throws that demonstrate why the Colts might be willing to start the season with the inexperienced but physically tantalizing prospect."

Richardson—the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft—shined during practice on Sunday. Per James Boyd of The Athletic, he threw three TDs with the first team in 11-on-11 drills, including a deep ball to wide receiver Alec Pierce. Minshew went 14-of-18 but threw an interception on the final play of practice.

Richardson's big day is an excellent sign for the Colts because it shows he's gaining a better understanding of their offense and will keep progressing.

"Man honestly, [Richardson's] just so much more comfortable," linebacker Zaire Franklin said in a Sunday news conference. "[He's] starting to find his rhythm, starting to find his version of the game at this level which is great to see. Obviously, mistakes are still there. He's still a young player, but it's just encouraging to see that growth, especially from early on until now."

Richardson, 22, will have plenty of growing pains, as he only started 13 games in three seasons at Florida. 

Minshew, entering his fifth season, could still win the job. He may have a leg up after playing under Colts HC Shane Steichen for two seasons while Steichen served as Eagles OC in 2021 and 2022. 

Despite Minshew's experience, Richardson possesses better size (6-foot-4, 244 pounds) and arm strength. Both qualities make him a more appealing option than Minshew, who has an 8-16 record as a starter.
Steichen has yet to name a starter for Week 1, but don't be surprised if he picks Richardson because the rookie's potential is hard to ignore.
