Report: Jets 'willing to move' four-time Pro Bowler before trade deadline

Don't be surprised if the New York Jets are active before the trade deadline on Tuesday.

ESPN's Rich Cimini reported the franchise is interested in moving running back Dalvin Cook and defensive end Carl Lawson.

"The spotlight is on [general manager Joe] Douglas and whether he'll trade the former starters before the trade deadline," wrote Cimini.

"Douglas is willing to move them, sources close to the situation said, but he's not going to give them away, with the Jets (3-3) still in contention."

Trading Cook and Lawson makes sense because the team has reduced their roles. A four-time Pro Bowler, Cook is averaging a career-low 2.8 yards per carry entering Week 8. Lawson has only played on a career-low 24 percent of defensive snaps, per Pro Football Reference.

However, trading them could be difficult as neither has attracted trade suitors. Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported Saturday that "the Jets aren't getting many calls" on Cook or Lawson.

Yet New York could still find a way to make a deal since Dougals is aggressive and perseverant.

"On the job since 2019, Douglas has made deadline deals every year," wrote Cimini, "Douglas is already on the board this year, having dealt [wide receiver] Mecole Hardman Jr. to the Kansas City Chiefs for a 2025 sixth-rounder. It was the 23rd player trade of the Douglas era, not counting draft pick swaps. That's more than a flurry of activity — it's a blizzard."

Lawson will probably yield a bigger market than Cook. Teams like the Las Vegas Raiders reportedly want to add pass-rushing depth. But a team that desperately needs another RB might take a flier on Cook.

Regardless, the Jets should move on from players they're not using and acquire depth at other positions or more draft capital.
