Report: Denver Broncos Hiring Former Its Former Head Coach As Defensive Coordinator
Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

The Denver Broncos are hiring a defensive coordinator

The Denver Broncos are bringing in a new regime led by head coach Sean Payton for the 2023 season. After a long and public search for a defensive coordinator, a new report Thursday names who the Broncos plan to hire for next season.

The Broncos were looking at former NFL head coach Rex Ryan. He was considered a “top choice” in the early part of the coaching search. Most recently, former NFL head coach and longtime Patriots assistant Matt Patricia was a candidate. The Broncos went with a third option, who has ties to the organization.

According to Peter Schrager with Fox Sports, the Broncos will hire Vance Joseph as their next defensive coordinator.

The 50-year-old coach was most recently the defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals from 2019-22. Before taking the job in Arizona, Joseph was the head coach for the Broncos in 2017-18. He had an 11-21 record at Denver before the team fired him.

Now Joseph will be tasked with working on the Broncos with Payton to make the team competitive again. Something they have not been since Joseph accepted the Broncos’ head coaching job.
