Earlier on Wednesday, the Seattle Seahawks announced that they've released offensive tackle Chad Wheeler following serious and disturbing domestic violence allegations that include the 27-year-old NFL player nearly killing his girlfriend.
Wheeler took to Twitter on Wednesday to explain he's walking away from football and seeking help:
Events happened over the weekend that transpired from a manic episode. I am deeply sorry for the pain and suffering that I have caused to Alleah and her family.

I apologize profusely for the turmoil that I have caused to my family, teammates, fans and those closest to me. The most important thing right now is that Alleah gets the care she needs and I get help. Both are happening.

It is time for me to walk away from football and get the help I need to never again pose a threat to another. I cannot express my sorrow or remorse enough. I am truly ashamed.

Brady Henderson of ESPN explained that Wheeler reportedly suffers from bipolar disorder and had recently stopped taking his medication. The King County prosecutor's office charged Wheeler with three felonies on Wednesday afternoon:
Former #Seahawks tackle Chad Wheeler formally charged by King County prosecutor's office with three felony charges: first-degree domestic violence assault, domestic violence unlawful imprisonment and resisting arrest. Arraignment Feb. 9, at which he's expected to enter a plea.

The NFL will likely suspend Wheeler if he attempts to resume his career at any point down the road.
