Ravens QB Close To Achieving Lofty Career Goal

When longtime NFL quarterback Josh Johnson was a Denver Bronco during last year's preseason, he made a bold proclamation that only 21 quarterbacks have done before.

“I want to play at least until I’m 40,” Johnson said. “I’m going a year at a time, then I’ll re-evaluate again after 40. But until then, I’m trying to keep it going as long as I can.”

Johnson is back in Baltimore after signing with the Ravens Monday after being released just two days prior to make room for linebacker Jeremiah Moon on the active roster against the Indianapolis Colts Sunday.

The Oakland, California, native will be Baltimore's No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart behind Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley.

The 37-year-old has been playing the long game with his NFL career.

After being taken in the fifth round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2008 NFL Draft, Johnson has since become a journeyman in the league, playing for 14 different franchises. The most games he has played in one year in the NFL came in 2010 when he appeared in 11 games.

Other than three years in Tampa Bay, Johnson has played in at least one game with the Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, the New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers and the then-Washington Redskins for one season a piece. Other teams Johnson has signed on with but has not appeared in a game have been the Colts, Broncos, Buffalo Bills, New York Giants, Houston Texans, Detroit Lions and the-then Oakland Raiders.

He was out of the NFL for two seasons, playing with the San Diego Fleet of the Alliance of American Football and the Los Angeles Wildcats of the XFL in 2019 and 2020, respectively.

Johnson is 1-8 as a starter, completing 58 percent of his passes for 2,280 yards, 12 touchdowns and 16 interceptions while getting sacked 29 times.

However, in 15 seasons, Johnson has made approximately $10.6 million, according to Spoctrac.
